The London Hospital Women’s Group began in the 1970s and continued into the 1980s. The group was open to any women working at the hospital, so we had medical students, nurses, computer programmers, and other staff, possible a ward clerk and laboratory staff – my memory is not very good! We discussed issues of sexism in the workplace and pursued many campaigns within the hospital, around abortion, childcare, medical education as well as taking our handsewn banner on the various marches and strikes that were going on at the that time. Whatever happened to that banner? Forgotten beneath someone’s bed I suspect. I remember visiting Jo Spence of the ‘Hackney Flashers’ who helped us make some large educational posters. I am still in touch with other members of this group and we hope to meet up soon and retrieve more memories of our activities to put on this website.
