Introduction

Three of us, Amber, Michele and Lynne were undergraduate students at Essex University between 1977 and 1981.  The Women’s Liberation Movement was a powerful presence at Essex; we became part of that, as friends and activists, both together and differently, through our varied responses to radical and socialist feminist politics.  Over the past few months, we’ve been meeting together to talk about those days:  what they meant to us then, what they mean to us now, and what the feminist politics of that time might mean for a new generation of women.  We sent some of our reflections to our friend Chris, who was at Essex from 1980 – 1982, and she’s contributed her own memories.  We hope these pieces might inspire other women who were at Essex during these years to write something for HOWL too.
